A 15-person roster for the next ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, which will take place in Australia in October-November, was unveiled on Tuesday, September 6, by Cricket South Africa (CSA). The Proteas have been assigned to Group B of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, which also includes Bangladesh, Pakistan, and India.
The South African National Cricket Team had a fantastic tournament in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2021 in the United Arab Emirates. They were grouped with England, Australia, the West Indies, and Sri Lanka in the group of death. The team captained by Temba Bavuma won four of their five games in the group stage, but they were unable to advance to the semifinals because of a subpar net run rate.
Temba Bavuma, the limited-overs captain, has joined the T20 World Cup squad after overcoming an elbow injury sustained during the T20I series against Team India in June.
Tristan Stubbs, a young Proteas star, was also given his first World Cup call-up after an outstanding batting performance in the just-completed series against the England National Cricket Team.
Rassie van der Dussen, however, is not included in the Proteas roster for the major competition. Notably, the great batter’s fractured left index finger, which he received during the second Test against England in Manchester, has disqualified him from the competition. The 33-year-old will have surgery and miss at least six weeks of work as a result.
The CSA Convenor of Selectors, Victor Mpitsang, said that the availability of several excellent players in the nation made the squad selection process rather difficult for the selectors.
“Selecting this team was really difficult because there were so many players who had been in fantastic form over the preceding several months and were competing at a level that caught the selectors’ attention.
Tristan Stubbs, who was not considered a year ago, did an amazing job of pushing his way into the mix based on his results, and his selection should serve as motivation for other aspiring young athletes. We are also happy to have our captain Temba Bavuma back from injury, and we are sure that his presence will energise the squad even more.
“When this team just defeated England in England, they displayed their incredible ability and brilliance. These kinds of performances are encouraging for us as we prepare for the World Cup. Overall, we are pleased with the selection of players and forward to see them represent the nation in Australia, according to Victor Mpitsang.
