Pakistan’s team for the upcoming T20 World Cup, which will take place in Australia from October 16 to November 13, was unveiled on Thursday. Along with fast bowlers Mohammad Wasim Junior and Shaheen Shah Afridi, top-order batsman Shan Masood has been selected for the 15-player World Cup squad for the first time, and the three traveling reserves are Fakhar Zaman, Mohammad Haris, and Shahnawaz Dahani.
Wasim Junior has been added after fully recovering from the side strain he sustained during the Asia Cup, and Afridi, who is receiving treatment in London for a knee injury and will likely start bowling early next month, will join the team on October 15 in Brisbane.
The World Cup-bound team will compete in the T20I tri-series in Christchurch from October 7–14 with Bangladesh and New Zealand as the other participating teams, before their arrival in Brisbane on October 15.
“We have a team that can perform strongly in the T20 World Cup,” said chief selector Muhammad Wasim. Since almost the same group of players has been a part of the T20I squad following the 2021 World Cup in the UAE, we have shown faith and confidence in them. Since November 2021, these players have excelled, and as a result, we have won nine of our last 13 T20 Internationals. We have invested in these cricket players, so it is only fair that they get the chance to prove themselves in the World Cup, an occasion for which they have been working hard to get ready.
“We had to make sure that these players had continuity and support, and we have done that. The news that Shaheen Shah Afridi would likely start bowling again early next month is promising.
All of the players who will go for the World Cup have been picked by the selectors, with the exception of Fakhar Zaman and Shaheen Shah Afridi, for the seven-match T20I series against England. The selectors have replaced them with all-rounder Aamir Jamal and unidentified spinner Abrar Ahmed.
