ICC T20 WINNING HISTORY
Twenty20 cricket, commonly known as T20 cricket, is a shortened version of cricket that was launched in 2003 and revolutionised the game by introducing rule modifications that emphasised striking and scoring, attracting a new audience to the sport.
The basic rules are the same as in the longer versions, but innings are limited to 20 overs per side (eight balls delivered, or thrown, by a bowler to a batsman at the opposite wicket), with a maximum of four overs for each bowler and fielder placement restrictions designed to encourage big hitting by the batsmen and high scores. T20 became the most popular and lucrative form of cricket in a short period of time, notably in India, where the Indian Premier League (IPL) attracts large audiences and millions more watch matches on television. Former Test batsman Martin Crowe created a shorter style of cricket known as Cricket Max in New Zealand in the 1990s, but the formal regulations for T20 were set by the England and Wales Cricket Board in 2003, and the inaugural event was contested by English county sides.
Other countries immediately embraced the concept, and Australia and New Zealand faced each other in a humorous T20 match in Auckland two years later, marking the first official international T20 match. Both teams donned 1980s-style outfits and (mainly artificial) moustaches. T20, on the other hand, rapidly became clear as a way to bring a new, dynamic, youthful audience to cricket. India won the inaugural T20 World Cup in South Africa in 2007, establishing a big market for T20 on the subcontinent, which the IPL swiftly exploited. Following that, World Cups were held in a variety of cricket-playing countries, with the West Indies winning the most (two). Each major cricketing country has created its own domestic T20 competitions, and at the end of each T20 season, a Champions League competition between the best club sides—similar to that played in European football (soccer)—is conducted.

Zimbabwe surprised Australia to win their first match against an ICC full member in four years, with Brendan Taylor leading the way with an undefeated 64.
Pakistan won all three of their Super 8 games, with skipper Shoaib Malik leading from the front and Gul proving to be a strong bowler, to defeat New Zealand and go to the final.
Yuvraj Singh was the tournament’s most important player, scoring 70 runs off 30 balls in India’s semifinal victory against Australia, which set up a final between cricket’s two biggest rivals, which India won by barely five runs. Meanwhile, Yuvraj’s six sixes in an over against England cemented his reputation.
Before Stuart Broad bounded in to bowl to Yuvraj in their group stage encounter, Herschelle Gibbs was the only batter to have done so in international cricket.
Broad’s bowling was shortly carried to the four corners of Kingsmead after an argument with Andrew Flintoff enraged the Indian great. Yuvraj scored 50 in 12 balls and established a chapter in T20 history that is still unsurpassed.
WINNER PAKISTAN (2009)
T20 cricket was born in England, and the sport’s greatest competition was held there for the second time. The mere mention of the Netherlands, on the other hand, sends shivers down the spines of English cricket fans.

In the knockout rounds, Shahid Afridi hit his stride with bat and ball, striking half-centuries in the semifinals and final as Pakistan beat Sri Lanka by eight wickets in a low-scoring Lord’s encounter.
WINNER ENGLAND (2010)
England beat arch-rivals Australia to be named champions in the West Indies, ending a lengthy wait for a triumph in an ICC-sanctioned global limited-overs event.
Despite a poor start, Kevin Pietersen was awarded man of the tournament for his role to England’s victory, ending with 248 runs from six matches.
His most important contribution came in a crucial 111-run partnership with Craig Kieswetter against Australia, when he scored 47 off 31 balls to help England win their first major ICC competition.
After a Duckworth-Lewis-induced loss to the hosts and a no-result against Ireland, Paul Collingwood’s team advanced from Group D in second place, behind the West Indies.
England, on the other hand, came alive in the knockout rounds, winning their Super 8s group with wins over the reigning champions Pakistan and one of the pre-tournament favourites, South Africa.
Pietersen missed England’s last Super 8 game to attend the birth of his first child, but he returned for the semifinal against Sri Lanka, when he hit an unbeaten 42 off 26 balls.
On the opposite side of the draw, Australia and Sri Lanka both won their groups to advance, while the West Indies and 2007 winners India were eliminated.
Australia subsequently won a dramatic match against Pakistan to get to the final, where they were defeated by England, who chased down 148 to win by seven wickets.
WINNER WESTINDIES (2012)
The West Indies won the first T20 World Cup to be hosted in an Asian country, becoming the first Asian country to win the tournament.
After honing their abilities in the IPL’s sub-continental conditions, Gayle, Kieron Pollard, and Sunil Narine took their talents to the world stage in spectacular manner.
Following West Indies’ ICC Champions Trophy triumph in 2004, Darren Sammy’s side remained steady from start to finish, ending an eight-year drought for global silverware.
After placing second in their group behind Australia, the Windies also finished second in their Super 8s group behind Sri Lanka, who defeated them by nine wickets in their first match.
In the other group, table-toppers Australia and Pakistan advanced, with the latter losing by a tight 16-run margin to Sri Lanka in the semifinals.
Gayle’s explosive unbeaten 75 off 41 balls helped the West Indies surge into the final with a 74-run victory against Australia in their last-four match.
Marlon Samuels, on the other hand, stole the show in Colombo, hitting 78 off 56 balls to lead the Windies to a historic 36-run victory.
WINNER SRILANKA (2014)
Sri Lanka won the 2014 ICC T20 World Cup, defeating India by six wickets in the final in Bangladesh, putting an end to their status as the almost man.
Sri Lanka has lost in the 2007 and 2011 World Cup finals after winning the 1996 50-over World Cup, as well as coming second in the 2009 and 2012 T20 World Cups, the latter on home soil.
Paul Farbrace, an Englishman, led them to victory, with the entire squad contributing. The death bowling of Lasith Malinga and Nuwan Kulasekara limited India to 130-4 in the final, while Kumar Sangakkara’s unbeaten 52 from 35 balls guided his team to victory.

WINNER WESTINDIES (2016)
With a thrilling T20 World Cup victory in India in 2016, the West Indies broke new ground, becoming the first team to win the tournament twice.
Following blasting his country to success in 2012, Marlon Samuels was at it again four years later, hitting 85 off only 66 balls to claim his second player of the match award in a T20 World Cup final after a four-wicket victory against England.
Although Samuels was named player of the match, it was clear who had the champagne moment in the final.
With four successive sixes off Ben Stokes in the last over, big-hitting all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite went from relative unknown to cricketing celebrity.
Afghanistan was the biggest beneficiary of the 2016 competition, which included 16 teams for the second time after 2014. Afghanistan was the only associate nation to make it to the Super 10s.
Mohammad Nabi, an all-rounder, headed the bowling rankings with 12 scalps, bowling well in combination with Rashid Khan, a 17-year-old leg-spinner who claimed 11 victims.
