Dewald Brevis made an impression in the 2022 IPL and is expected to be rushed into South Africa’s XI for the ICC Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup later this year.

The critics couldn’t have been paying attention if their eyebrows were aroused when the Mumbai Indians spent Rs 3 crore to bring an 18-year-old Brevis to the franchise.

The South African teenager proved his class right away, slipping into Mumbai’s IPL starting XI at number three and demonstrating his ridiculous range of strokes and ability to score eye-wateringly quickly, stroking 29 from 19 balls in his debut IPL match against Kolkata Knight Riders.

Brevis hasn’t looked back since, smashing five maximums in a 25-ball 49 against Punjab Kings that almost helped his team pull off an unusual run chase, and slamming 31 off 13 balls against Lucknow Super Giants.

However, after a pair of low scores in Mumbai, Indians coach Mahela Jayawardena altered his lineup in an attempt to establish a winning recipe.

Brevis’ star is still rising, as the 19-year-old is expected to be called up to South Africa’s complete T20I squad ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia later this year.

Nobody who saw the bright Brevis light up the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup in January and February would be surprised by how the lad from Johannesburg has fared in recent months.

Brevis was the tournament’s leading scorer, with 506 runs in six innings, including two hundreds, a 96 against Ireland, and a 97 against eventual runners-up England.
